What all three generations can do together
The pontoon morning. A 12-passenger pontoon at $300 to $400 for a half day is the single best three-generation activity in Destin, because everyone is on the same platform doing a different thing: the grandparent under the bimini, the toddler wading on the sandbar in a life jacket, the teenager off the swim ladder. The tide decides the launch. High water at East Pass is 5:47am today and walks to 8:44am Wednesday, so an 8am launch Monday or Tuesday puts you on the sandbar at its deepest and slackest, and a 9am launch Wednesday does the same. Be back by noon on the front-half days; the storm chance is 30 and 20 percent after 1pm. Vendor barges have thinned out since Labor Day, so bring your own food and plan the restroom stop at the harbor.
The dolphin cruise. Two hours, $30 to $50 a seat, shade, seats, a bathroom on the bigger boats and a near-certain sighting this week; the fall pods are working the pass on the afternoon ebb. Every age from infant to ninety, no swimming required. Thursday and Friday the cruise stays in the sheltered harbor because of the east wind, which for a grandparent is a feature.
Henderson Beach State Park. Thursday through Saturday the east wind of 10 to 15 sits sideshore on the Gulf and the water near the beach goes nearly flat while the bay gets choppy. Boardwalks, showers, shade pavilions, a per-vehicle fee and no crowd. The nights drop to 74 Thursday and 73 Friday, the first cool evenings of the season; the Okaloosa Island Pier after dinner those nights is the free, unforgettable version of a family activity.
The sunset boats. Tuesday, September 22, sunset is 6:43pm and the equinox is at 7:06pm Central, 23 minutes later, with the sun going down due west over the pass. Saturday, September 26, is the Harvest Moon, rising over the bay opposite the 6:38pm sunset. A private tiki boat carries six at $350 to $500, so ten people is two boats booked for the same 5pm departure; or a pontoon's 2:30pm-to-sunset half day takes all twelve. Saturday's sunset slot is the only booking this week that sells out.
What to split, and where to meet
Some things do not scale across sixty years of age, and forcing them makes everyone miserable. Split these and name a meeting point.
- Jet skis are for the teens and parents: drivers must be 18 to rent and 14 to operate, riders under 14 sit behind an adult. $85 to $150 an hour, best from 9 to 11am Monday through Wednesday on winds of 5. The grandparent and the toddler take the dolphin cruise at 10am from the same harbor and everyone meets for lunch at noon.
- Parasailing works for anyone over the operator's age and combined weight minimum, which rules out toddlers and some grandparents. $75 to $110 a flight, Sunday through Wednesday on the calm days; some boats still fly in 10 to 15 but the ride is bumpier.
- Snorkel trips to the jetties, $45 to $75, are for confident swimmers; Monday through Wednesday mornings, before the east wind stirs up the beach side.
- The captained charter, $450 to $700 for four hours and up to six, is the one split that pairs the oldest and the youngest fishers: a grandfather and two teenagers on the Wednesday or Thursday afternoon ebb, when late-September bull redfish are on the jetties, while the rest of the family does the harbor boardwalk and the museum.
The meeting point that works every time is the harbor boardwalk, because every boat in this list leaves from it and there is shade, food and a restroom at the dock. Pacing a week for a two-year-old and an eighty-year-old
One water activity a day, in the morning. One land or shade activity in the afternoon, with a nap built in for both ends of the age range. Dinner at 5:30, before the crowds that do not exist this week anyway, and the sunset at 6:38 to 6:46 as the evening's event. The hottest day is Wednesday at 89; make that the pool-and-indoor day. The water is 87 degrees all week, warmer than Thursday and Friday mornings' air, so early swims are the comfortable ones.
Life jackets: Florida requires every child under six to wear one on any vessel under 26 feet while it is moving, and the rental counters and cruise boats supply them by size. Fit the toddler's at the dock, not on the water. For a grandparent with limited mobility, ask the counter about the pontoon's boarding gate height and the tiki boat's step at the dock; both are low, and both crews are used to helping.
